Unit 6 - Recording

Learning Aim A

The group I have chosen for recording is Kelly Walker, Abbie Hughes-Sendall and Kiera.
Kelly-Vocal
Abbie-Guitar
Kiera-Drums

The song they will be singing/playing is Ho Hey by The Lumineers, this was there choice because they have put alot of time and effort into learning the lyrics and cords.

I have chosen a condenser microphone for the vocals because the sound source is quicker and sharper therefore better music quality for the singers. A condenser microphone is better for a human voice because it picks up the frequencies a lot better than a dynamic microphone would.

I am also using a Dynamic microphone but this is for the drum kit. The reason i chose a dynamic mic for the drum kit is because it has a better flow for instruments and because you can direct it straight towards the cone of the amp, it only picks up the instrument not background sound which gives a much clearer sound.

I will also need an acoustic drum kit because i would rather use an acoustic drum kit as a pose to electric because the sound is more realistic.

Another piece of equiptment I need is a mic stand, i chose this to keep the mic in place so it doesnt wobble and fall giving my sound a low quality also it avoids the voalists holding the mic which could change the pitch, volume and quality of the singers.

The last instrument i would need to use is an acoustic guitar, i am using an acoustic guitar because i prefer this sound to an electric one because an accoustic one is softer and would be better for this type of track.

I will need 1 Amp for the Drum kit so the sound will play clearly and at a good quality, this is what i
need the dynamic mic for.

A lead i will need so it all connects is an XLR jack cable, i chose this because its the right wire which connects to the soundproof room so the sound will work.

I will need a soundproof room to record the sound track properly and avoid any background noises to get a high quality sound for when i mix the track together.

A program i would need to use to mix and connect all the vocals and instruments together is Cubase, i have chosen this program because i am familier with cubase and its easy to mix tracks together with.

The final thing i will need is an M Audio Profire. This is an interface that will connect the sound from the soundproof room to the computer in the next room either through headphones or speakers.

Session 1
Recording the drums first and Importing original track to cubase.
I need 2 condenser microphones and 2 microphone stands.
I need XLR-XLR lead to connect the equipment and give a good high quality sound.
I also need 1 pair of headphones so the performer could hear the backing track to the song.
I expect this session to last around 30 minutes as the drums only has a small consistent part.
My file for this session was saved in My computer-BTEC music-Year 11-Demi Bird
This session is recorded on Channel 1, i didn't use any inserts in this session.
Things that could go wrong in this session are troubleshooting or the volume could be too loud. I could solve this by doing a soundcheck before and adjusting the volume to a steady one.
Session2
Recording Guitar.
I used a dynamic microphone and 1 microphone stand.
I used an XLR-XLR lead to connect the equipment and give a good high quality sound.
I also used 1 pair of headphones so the performer could hear the backing track to the song.
I expect this session to last around 30-40 minutes because getting the right beat of the song could be tricky sometimes, this could increase the session time.
My file for this session was saved in My computer-BTEC music-Year 11-Demi Bird
This session is recorded on Channel 2, i didn't use any inserts in this session.
Things that could go wrong in this session is that the guitar could be out of tune so before hand someone will need to check that the instruments are in tune.
Session 3
Recording 1st vocalist
I need condenser microphone and 1 microphone stand.
I need an XLR-XLR lead to connect the equipment and give a good high quality sound.
I also need 1 pair of headphones so the performer could hear the backing track to the song.
I expect this session to last around 30 minutes.
My file for this session was saved in My computer-BTEC music-Year 11-Demi Bird
This session is recorded on Channel 3, i didn't use any inserts in this session.
Things that could go wrong in this session is that if the vocalist forgets the lyrics. So this problem doesn't occur i will print off the lyrics before so whoever singing has a clear copy.
Session 4
Recording last vocalist
I need 1 condenser microphone and 1 microphone stand.
This session is recorded on Channel 4, i didn't use any inserts in this session.
Things that could go wrong in this session is that if the vocalist forgets the lyrics. So this problem doesn't occur i will print off the lyrics before so whoever singing has a clear copy.
Session 5 (Last session)
Mix track together on cubase and make any edits of changes.
I will not need a microphone or stand.
I need an XLR-XLR lead to connect the equipment and give a good high quality sound.
I expect this session to last around 45-60 minutes long as mixing can be tricky especially as you need to make sure everything goes in time together and there are no mistakes.

This session is recorded on Channel 5. This inserts i used in this session were EQ, Reverberation, Compression and gating. I also used balance to balance out different volume levels, some volumes were higher than others such as the vocals had a higher volume than the drums, this makes the track a lot better as it sounds more equal. I also used panning.

How To Mix
  1. First of all you crop any noises at the beginning and end of your tracks.
  2. Then any quiet noises you added gating to them so they would be much clearer and louder.
  3. Then add Equalisation(EQ) to make the track sound either more bassy or higher pitch depending on your type of song,
  4. Then add reverb and add effects to each individual track.
  5. After this you can listen to each track together and change the volume levels for each track to make them sound all the same lever because some could high a higher gain than others.
  6. After this you could add panning, this is optional and there are different types of tracks, I didn't add this to mine as I felt it sounded a lot better without panning.
  7. Then compress all the tracks together so they sound like one track, you can do this individual or all together, I done each one individual track then all together which gives a better mellow sound.
  8. Another effect I added was fade in/out. I faded my track out at the end and this helped the song sound like a finished piece and really come together.
  9. Finally make sure all the tracks are aligned and in time with each other and font sound off beat

To make an effective recording

Drums- I only used 3 parts of the drum kit as I didn't need any other parts, I also  used two
overhead mics which picks up a better overall sound and doesn't pick up any unessisary background noises.

Vocals- I only had one vocalist which was Kelly, she sang 2 verses and one chorus. I placed the mic approximately 6 inches away from her face which would capture a much better sound, if to close you could hear breaths and undated noises and if too far from her the

Guitar- the guitar piece was very easy, it only had a repetition of 2 notes all throughout the song which was C and C major. I placed the mic on the twelfth fret for a better sound capture and it didn't pick up and guitar picking  and sliding from note to note, this gave a clearer sound.

Health and Safety

In the studio all wires will be taped to the floor to avoid the risk of anyone tripping and injuring themselves. To have a communication with the performer in the sound proof room i will speak through a mic into headphones that the performer will have on, i will check the volume levels before hand to ensure the both of our hearing safety. Before i start recording i will also make sure that all the equipment works and theres not faulty equipment. Any foods or liquids will be removed and kept well away from any electricals to avoid dangers such as electrocution and any damage to the equipment. I will remind everyone around the studio before and i begin to record to keep all liquids away. The door to the sound proof room will also have the door shut so no one can interrupt the performance.

Summary

Each session time was managed well and each week i completed the relevant tasks I was set. Everything was done in time and ready for the final deadline. Each session there was no issues or any delays, I feel each session progressed well and went smoothly.
