Unit 1:The Music Industry

Advantages of local venues and arenas

  • Its local which means close to home (not alot of travelling)
  • Easy to access.
  • Not much trouble getting there if its close(easy transportation).
  • Less money to hire out if you know local people that own the venue.
  • Not hard to contact the owner.
  • Bands can sometimes get scouted or spotted by someone in local venues looking for new bands/singers ect.
Disadvantages of loval venues and arenas
  • Can be expensive if you live in an expensive area.
  • You could be a lot more nervous because your friends and family that live in that area would most likely come and you could be worried about there thoughts and opinions on your performance.
  • You wouldn't get as much profit as you would on a bigger more known venue such as less people buying food and drink and less tickets on smaller local venues.
  • There would also be a limited audience for a local small venue.
  • Facilities for people would be a disadvantage because some venues wouldn't have proper speakers or lighting for your performance and you would then have a lot more work finding the proper equipment you need.

Types of local venues

  • Knebworth house
  • St Albans theatre
  • Monks Walk school (B block drama studio and A block hall)
  • Campus West
  • Howard Center
  • Doctors Tonic
  • White Horse Pub
  • Steamer Pub
  • Hatfield House
  • Club 85
Health and Safety at a venue

  • Wires-You will need to tape wires down so there is no hazard of tripping over any loose wires.
  • Spacial awarness- Performers need to have spacial awareness on stage that is why there is usually a mark or an 'X' on stage where the performer should stand.
  • First aid box- Make sure there is a first aid box close by incase any minor injuries such as accidental cuts or bumps.
  • Barriers around the stage- You will need barriers around the stage so no crazed fans will get onto the stage, Barriers will also ensure the performers safety from people that want to get on stage.
  • Equiptment- Make sure that equiptment isnt going to put anyone in danger such as electrical hazards and Faulty equipment
  • Drinks and Fluids- Drinks and Fluids should not be aloud enar equiptment and electrical appliances, this is a safety hazrd because electricution could occur.
  • Stage Diving-No stage diving should be aloud because of the health and safety of other people jumping off stage and the audience catching them.
  • Security Staff- You will need security staff to keep everyone under control and if there are any fights of arguments these can be controlled.

Health and safety round Monks Walk School

Advantages:
  1. There are fire bells to detect smoke and any fires that could occur would set off a bell
  2. indicating everyone to leave the school.

  1. That takes us to the point that they are allocated fire exits in almost every classroom and near by to ensure everyone's safety.
  2. There are also water sprinklers in every block to put out fires,
  3. Security cameras are in and on the outside of the school to avoid any break in's or bad events, this means staff/teachers will know what happened and where.
  4. Fire extinguishers are located in every block with signs to show how to use them.
  5. Any wires in B block Drama  are taped down during  performances.
Disadvantages:

1.  Safety hazard  in the art department of nails hanging out of walls from old art work.
2. Art department have hooks hanging out the ceiling displaying old art work.

The Big Project

Our class project is that we are hosting a gig for John legend and we all have different roles to play theses are;

Music Union
A music union is a type of company that deal with any legal requirements the could happen such as any major accidents or someone sueing the performer/s. An example of this is BECTU, I am one of the three music unions working on this project.

Promoter
A music promoter is someone who promotes the gig such as adverts, posters, leaflets and radio adverts, Promoters work with the artists representation and book everything you need such as venue, staging
and equipment.

Transportation and Hire Companies
Transportation is where you hire the equipment for and it also transports it from one place to another.

Artist management
This job you have to search for a venue and pay for any advertisements, they would have to work with the promoters.

Broadcaster
You have to control TV and radio company's and organise adverts that would market the event.

Royalty agency
Collect all the money together and sell some of the artists songs.
